Have you seen the work of Duncan Tonatiuh? He wrote the amazing book Separate is Never Equal about the fight Sylvia Mendez and her family endured to end segregation in California schools.

His book, Funny Bones: Posada and his Day of the Dean Calaveras has won the 2016 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal and a Pura Belpre Illustrator award.

This is a great informational book about Jose Guadalupe Posada. He is the artist who created the Dia de los Muertos illustrations. The book has both the historical illustrations and the work of Mr. Tonatiuh.

Great addition to your Dia de Los Muertos unit. Check it out!

Support Teachers in Detroit

Have you heard about the situation in Detroit? Teachers and students are working in substandard conditions every day. Something needs to be done about it! Are you ok with children being subjected to mold in their classrooms? Is it ok to walk by rat droppings in the hallway? As Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Stand up in support of Detroit teachers and students!!

What do I like to do in the winter?

Disneyland is right around the corner! I like to bundle up at night and head on over. The Abuelita hot chocolate and churro are a perfect snack to munch on while I watch the parade!

Learning about kindness and friendship through complimenting each other.

After a class discussion about positive personality traits and expanded sentences, students write compliments about each other on kindness cards.

This activity helps students see the good in each other. It also serves as a reminder forevermore as to their own good traits. I know I did this in high school and I STILL have my card! And best of all...it's free.

Kindness cards are a perfect accompaniment while your'e reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This is a guide to a close reading of Wonder by RJ Palacio. It's a wonderful book chronicling Auggie's, a young boy born with a facial deformity, journey through school and the adjustments he, his family and his classmates have to make.
