Magnetic Poetry

It's Technology Thursday!  Linking with Teaching Trio!

You remember those magnetic poetry kits?  I used to have one on my file cabinet but only a couple kids could use it at a time and the vocab was limited to what I had.  Well, this is a better idea!
It's an online magnetic poetry kit.  You can use the original, the nature kit, geek kit, mustache poet, poet kit or the love kit.  Each kit offers different vocabulary to work with.
I used this after we read Inside Out and Back Again.  You can use this with any book that has a connection to poetry- The Crossover, Flora and Ulysses, Brown Girl Dreaming etc..  Or you can just use it during your poetry unit! The kids had a blast creating poetry and they can then email a link to themselves. However, the link takes you back to the website.  It's especially helpful for kids who have difficulty beginning their writing.  With a bank of usable words, the kids have an easier time getting started on their poetry.
Get started on that poetry!  Fun and engaging for the kids.

SoL: Rolling around in my head

SoL: Rolling around in my head

There's just so much to do!  I have so much rolling around in my head. First, my classroom.  Prepare kids for the Christmas dance- we're dancing to Shake Up Christmas by Train.  Finish reading assessments.  Complete the Christmas around the world packet and accompanying assignments.  Get geometry projects together. Get homework packets together. Finish Flora and Ulysses...

More school stuff...make treats for staff, input data, plan with PLC, plan for UCLA study, etc.

Home...get decorations up, finish wrapping presents, plan Christmas Eve menu...

OK I feel better now.  I still have to do all this but at least I let it out and I feel better.

Inside Out and Back Again: close reading guide

Inside Out and Back Again
by Thannha Lai

Watch this video to meet Ha and her family.

I created a close reading guide for Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. It's a wonderful book written in free verse chronicling Ha's, a ten year old girl, journey from war-torn Vietnam to Alabama and her problems as a second language learner and with bullying.

Close reading will be an integral part of teaching with the Common Core. Students need to know how to be analytic when reading texts and poems. I have outlined the components of authentic literacy and what it looks like in the classroom. I formatted the guide as follows. It begins with an explanation of close reading and how to format a lesson. Then, there is a story summary, themes listed and character descriptions. I created focus questions for each and every chapter. There are explicit gradual release formatted lessons throughout. I included a close reading sheet for each of the explicit lessons. You could use the focus questions to create more close reading lessons using the blank templates or for class discussions. At the end, there is a blank sheet for planning and to use with close reading of different chapters. I hope your students enjoy it as much as my students did.

Awards for Inside Out and Back Again:
2012 Newbery Honor Book, 2011 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, New York Times Best Seller

Some comments my close reading guide has received:

"This was my first year using this book and your resources helped me out greatly! Thank you!"
"Love this! My ESL students are struggling with the novel and this will help."
"Thank you for this wonderful product! Walking through a close read with my students, helped them understand the process. It was fantastic being able to reproduce the novel in a close reading graphic organizer. This product saved me a lot of time!"
"Awesome resource! I can't wait to use it. I can see that it will be useful with SEVERAL different grades. Thank you!"

Comments
When reading someone's website, it's nice to leave a comment.  However, I don't like to put the website address, it looks clunky. It's better to make a hyperlink.  Here is a way to leave your comment and your blog address so that people can then go visit you!

Here is how you can make a hyperlink in a comments box.
Just type <a href="web address you're linking to">text you're link from</a>
as in: <a href="http://lisateachr.blogspot.com/">LisaTeachR'sClassroom</a>
My example would like this:

SoL: Embarrassing!

SoL: Embarrassing!

So I bought a dress which I thought was a sweater dress. I know, I know, I should have tried it on but I just hate shopping. When I put it on this morning, I noticed it was way too short.  So I threw a skirt on under it and went off to work.

At this time, we are practicing for our Christmas performance.  The kids came up with movements for "Shake Up Christmas".  They're doing really well.  I was standing up front giving them cues for the movements.  All of a sudden I felt a breeze.   MY skirt was puddled around my boots!  Thank goodness I was wearing thick tights!!   Ay yai yai!  Lesson learned.  Make sure your clothes fit right!
